Only accessible by boat or plane, the town of Stehekin in Northern Lake Chelan holds 80 people, who share it’s natural beauty and open hearted kindness with the few that visit.
Stehekin is a town at the top of Lake Chelan. Lake Chelan, 55 miles long, is one of the deepest lakes in the USA, and one of the clearest too.
The best, easiest, and cheapest way to get to Stehekin is on the Lady of the Lake. Departing from Chelan every morning at 8:30, there are two routes. The slow one and the fast one. The fast one gives you 1 hour in Stehekin, and the slow one 1.5 hours. A combination of the two, however, gives you 3 hours there, plus 6.5 hours on a scenic boat ride up and down the lake, shown below.
Stehekin holds some stunning scenery, such as Rainbow Falls, Harlequin Bridge, and even the Stehekin Visitor’s Center.
Stehekin is a very small town, and therefore a very close knit community. The 80 people living in this town create an atmosphere unlike any other. The town gives off a feeling like it’s in the 90’s, and the friendliness of the people makes it so much better.
After having a great day in Stehekin, I arrived back in Chelan at 6:00 pm, only to go to dinner with my family at Sorrento’s Ristorante. Although happy to be in civilization, I did miss the mountain air.
